Chick Days at the Farm Store

It's that time of year. When you walk into the farm store and the sound of chirping chicks greets your ears.

It's a fun time for the kids to see the baby chickens. Naomi especially loved it.

Naomi's hand is blurry in this picture because she was quickly raising it out of the tub. She wanted to pet them, but as soon as they would move she'd quickly jerk her hand away.

She began to get braver and braver as time went on.

I hope some day we have chickens again. I miss the fresh eggs. But that requires building a chicken house and fencing them in because of the dogs. Maybe when the boys get bigger they can build one for me.

Groundhog Day

The other day Sky was barking. Nothing unusual...she always barks. But this time she wouldn't stop. So finally I went to take a look and find out what she was barking at.

There was something under the air conditioner. I told Cassidy to put both dogs in the basement so we could find out what it was.

It turned out to be a groundhog.

Cassidy got a stick and tried to poke it out. But it would have none of that. The thing kept growling at her.


She kept poking but he wasn't budging. She decided maybe a shovel would do better. And sure enough he popped his head out.



He took off but didn't go toward the trees.

Instead, he decided to go under the four wheeler.

We knew we couldn't let the dogs out until he was safe in the trees so now we needed to coax him out from under the four wheeler. By the way, the whole time Naomi thinks this is wonderful.

Cassidy tries throwing rocks at him and finally he makes a mad dash for the trees.

Bye bye Mr. Groundhog. I'm glad you'll live to see another day.

When we let the dogs out they ran back to the air conditioner to look for him.



"He's gotta be here somewhere!!"

"Nope, I don't see him."



"We took care of him!!! He won't be back!"

One of the ladies at our church got the girls in the nursery matching dresses. Naomi was so excited to have the same dress as her friends. The second picture would have been so much better if Naomi's hand wasn't blocking Moriah's face but the batteries in my camera died so I wasn't able to get another picture.

Another Warm Day

A little over a week ago we had another nice, warm day. The boys took me to see their clubhouse that they're building.

They did all this by themselves.

Even though it was warmer the creek was still frozen over, which made for some fun.

The creek is only ankle deep so there was nothing to worry about.


The dog was having a blast playing with this log that was sticking out of the ground.








The boys also showed me the tombstones that they found one day while exploring. They aren't on our property; just a little bit off the property line.


The one above was Jr. McKillen, age 8yrs and 8mos. Died 1856.

This one reads Charles McKillen, age 25yrs. Died 1859.

Someday we hope to find some more information on who these people were and why they lived such short lives.

Snow Cream

Yesterday it snowed, so today Cassidy and Naomi made snow cream.

They took snow, some milk, sugar and chocolate syrup and mixed it all up.

It tasted pretty good. They had to eat it fast because it was melting.

But the best thing was that they had some special "sister time" together.

Loving the Warmth

I'm thankful for the days the Lord gives us in the middle of winter when it's warmer than normal. Yesterday it was 57 and the sun was shining.

So we took advantage of the warmth and went outside in the afternoon. It was great to feel the sun on our faces.

We enjoyed spending time with the animals.

Cassidy and I were able to take Trissy and Peyton for a nice walk. We didn't ride them, just led them around.

Today, we're inside. It's only 29 and feels like 16. Brrrrr!

Oh well, spring is only a couple months away.

My Little Helper

I love the age when children think chores are fun. When I tell Naomi it's time to do the laundry, she's excited!! Wish I could say the same for myself and the other kids.

What makes us change our attitude toward chores?


Is it because we know there are funner things we could be doing?

Or is it because we've done the same thing over thousands of times and it becomes boring?

Whatever the reason, I know that we can be thankful. Maybe we won't get excited, but instead of complaining about the chores we can find ways to be thankful.

Take the laundry for instance. I'm thankful God's given us plenty of clothes that get dirty and need cleaned.

I'm thankful for a washing machine so I don't have to do it by hand.

Also I'm thankful for the dryer so my clothes can get dry quickly.

I'm thankful that I have a lot of laundry because it means I have a lot of people in my family.

So, while I may not get excited about doing the laundry like Naomi does, she does remind me to be thankful.

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men"

Colossians 3:23
